The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is truly amazing and completely unexpected. In the midst of the rolling hills, geothermal areas, giant lake, and sweeping mountain vistas of Yellowstone, there's this spectacular canyon with two waterfalls. Since we were coming up from the south, the first turn-off to the canyon takes you to the famous Artist's Point and the lesser-known Uncle Tom's Trail. If you're in any kind of physical condition, Uncle Tom's is an absolute must. Here's some information on it.
When it says that the trail is steep, it's not an exaggeration. Here's a shot looking down the steps towards the bottom, which is several hundred steps below. Incidentally, I'm terrified of heights, so I went down it with both hands firmly gripping the right hand rail. It was easier walking back up ...
While I was terrified walking down the steps, there was an amazing reward at the end. The view of the Lower Falls is just spectacular. The Lower falls is 308 feet high and has a roar that is almost indescribable. While the picture shows the beauty of the falls, including the almost perpetual rainbow at its bottom, it cannot capture the majesty of the roar as the water cascades to the bottom.
Here's a second shot that shows the full height of the falls and the accompanying canyon wall. If you look closely at the top right, you'll see the Brink of the Lower Falls overlook, which is on the north side of the Canyon.
We didn't stop at Artist's Point. The parking lot was too crowded. We went back to the main road and continued north about a half-mile to the next turn-off, which is the Brink of the Upper Falls. The Upper Falls is far smaller at 109 feet high, but it's still quite beautiful. here's a shot of the river as it races into the falls.
Here's a shot of the Upper Falls as the water cascades over it towards the pool at the bottom.
As you continue on the main road, another half mile away is the turnoff to the north rim of the canyon. Here's a classic shot of the Lower Falls from the famous Lookout Point on the north rim of the canyon of the Yellowstone
The north rim has two other famous view areas -- Grand View and Inspiration Point. We stopped at Grand View, which is very close to Lookout Point, but shows the opposite side of the canyon. Here's a shot from Grand View.
